Now that the summer is essentially over, many holidaymakers are finalizing their preparations for winter breaks, or getting ahead to book snowy holidays in spring 2012. There are a whole range of options out there for holidaymakers, so many choices of destination and package that it can be difficult to know what to choose. One good way to narrow down your options in a useful manner can be to find a destination which offers the activity option you are looking for, and then try to find accommodation close to that destination. If you are planning a skiing holiday, your job is easy as there is a selection of high-quality accommodation to be found within easy reach of virtually every ski resort in Europe.

Some fantastic accommodation is to be found in particular in skiing in Chamonix Mont Blanc, in the French Alps.

Chamonix Mont Blanc is a vibrant and deservedly popular skiing haven, with facilities and slopes to suit a wide range of skiing abilities, whether you have never put on a pair of skis before, or you are a seasoned skier and can’t wait to go hurtling down another black-rated expert slope. The area’s range of skiing attractions brings in both tourists and world-class sporting professionals, and the range of shops, restaurants and nightlife options in Chamonix means it is very friendly to tourists and those looking for something to do once they have got off the slopes.

The Chamonix area is split into four different areas, each with their own villages and interesting attractions. If you are not sure where to ski at, you could start in Le Tour, at the head of the valley. Le Tour offers gentle skiing terrain, ideal for finding your feet on skis for the first time. It is a big favourite for snowboarders, it has some well-kept snowy powder slopes (fringed with pine trees) which retain their snow quite a while after the Grand Montets slopes are no longer usable.

Not far away, the slopes of Brevent-Flegere offer fantastic views across to Mont Blanc and to the Mer de Glace glacier. The area is good for people in search of a varied and challenging skiing experience, with blue and red slopes as well as more difficult off-piste skiing. This is also a fantastic place if you want to unwind in the sun, devour a delicious lunch, and of course take in the sublime aspect of Mont Blanc. Once you have tried all the challenges Brevent-Flegere provides, you can move on to the somewhat daunting (yet truly beautiful) slopes of the Grands Montets.

The Grands Montets give access to some of the world’s best off-skiing routes, so if you are an experienced skier looking to really raise the bar on your next trip to the Alps. If you have less experienced skiers with you, they can go to the accessible areas on the front of the mountain, while you – with the help of a guide – explore the high routes of the Pas de Chevre, the Rectiligne couloir, the Poubelle couloir, and the Rognon glacier. All of them will take your breath away.

Of course, Chamonix is not the only ski resort in the Alps! There are plenty of others to choose from, from small and relatively undiscovered high-altitude villages, to popular resorts visited by huge amounts of tourists per year. For great skiing outside the borders of the French Alps, we recommend skiing in Klosters and Zermatt, which like Chamonix combine a great skiing experience with superb restaurants, shops and a welcoming ambience, not to mention convenient access to the slopes via ski lifts etc. And if they do not interest you, you could make your way to Bavaria, mixing in slope skiing with cross-country or even some mountain walking if you want an alternative to skiing.

If you have a bigger budget and want to head further afield, you could travel to the Sierra Nevada mountains in Spain, or to the snowy peaks of Tangiers, Morocco, the site of the highest ski resort in North Africa. Failing that, why not consider traveling to the sublime mountains of Quebec, for skiing in Canada?

The Laurentian mountains are home to a host of ski and outdoor adventure facilities, to suit not just seasoned sportspeople but also families looking for an introduction to the thrills and spills of skiing. If you go skiing in Canada, you can also make use of Quebec’s array of golf courses, should the mood take you.

Once you have picked your location and know where you are looking for accommodation, you might want to know how to find the most affordable self-catering property, and find out the most convenient way to book it. Holiday Rental Homes, our partners, are a great site to go to. You can search their large collection of self-catering accommodation close to ski resorts and slopes in Europe, and easily review the details of each property to ensure it meets your needs. There is a wide variety of properties out there, from three-storey chalets to small, cosy apartments. To narrow down your property search by a particular skiing destination, simply head to Holidayrentalhomes.com and click on ‘Explore activity holidays’, then click the ‘skiing’ icon. This takes you to a landing page from which you can locate the best property for you. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get skiing! Be sure to book ahead to avoid missing out on skiing in France, Germany, Switzerland and other great locations round the world.

We all know skiing is a wildly popular winter holiday activity, but why? Why do people flock to the ski slopes of the Alps, Canada, the United States and other snowy locations year after year? What keeps them coming back despite the challenges of skiing – such as lots of falls for beginners ?

Of course, one reason is the fantastic mountain views on offer at most ski resorts, particularly those in the heart of the Alps. Fun is another factor: skiing can be done with family and friends as a social activity, and in no way do you have to be an expert to enjoy the experience. Many people enjoy the physical exertion involved in skiing, which is good cardio-vascular exercise; it provides a refreshing alternative to more sedate beach holidays or scenic tours. If you do not want a holiday spent lounging on a beach, and are looking for a change of scene, a ski holiday could be just the thing.

Skiing also offers peace and quiet, a change from the hustle and bustle of some summer holiday resorts (eg: in Spain). In the French Alps for example, there are lots of charming little villages, offering a taste of authentic French life, culture and food (such as cheese dairy tours). Furthermore, skiing is a good choice in terms of travel options. The Alps occupy a position in Europe which is easy to access from France, the UK, Italy, Germany and Greece and Turkey. If you want to ski outside mainland Europe, Canada is a must; or if you want to ski on genuine snow and mountains within the UK, head to the Scottish Highlands. There are also skiing opportunities in Morocco (Algiers) and Spain (Sierra Nevada), if you are holidaying in those countries.

What can you expect from a skiing holiday? We have compiled a list of a few things for you to be aware of before you travel. Firstly, costs for equipment hire. Unless you are a dedicated skier and have your own equipment, you will need to factor the cost of skis and suitable clothing into your holiday budget. Secondly, be aware that not all ski resorts offer the same kind of experience. The most popular ski resorts have nightlife and lots of restaurants, while smaller, less well-known ones (such as Les Sybelles in the French Alps) may have less on offer in the way of dining and nightlife, and there may be fewer English speakers about. So if you want to get to use some French while on a ski holiday in the French Alps, it could be a good idea to go to a smaller ski resort where you may order meals in French, and even go on tours of local cheese dairies etc.

Then you should also consider your fitness levels. Depending on which resort you go to, you will encounter slopes of varying difficulty level, and carrying ski equipment up steep slopes is something that you may not want to attempt if you are not particularly fit. Remember too that there is tuition available at the best ski resorts, so do not worry if you have never been skiing before. And if skiing does not suit you, there are plenty of other mountain sports to enjoy, including snowboarding, paragliding and hiking.

Finally, ski slope difficulty levels: be aware that there are variations in how ski runs are rated at different resorts. Typically, though, a green run is a beginner slope; a blue run is also easy; red is intermediate (with a gradient not exceeding 40% typically); and black signifies an expert slope. Black is a broad classification, including slopes which are only slightly more difficult than intermediate ones, as well as the avalanche slopes such as those at Courchevel in the French Alps.

Holiday Rental Homes.com promotes a wide range of properties in several fantastic European ski resorts. By booking a self-catering property, you can have a cheap ski holiday that still offers a fantastic experience. You can make the most of lower prices, skipping the pricy accommodation and food on offer at busy hotels. You can also benefit from such features as extra storage space, heated rooms, indoor swimming pools (available at some Swiss chalets on the site) and broadband Internet access.

We recommend checking out our property listings for Austria, the French Alps and Switzerland in particular, for affordable prices and unbeatable quality. There are some superb ski holiday deals available, and many of them can be found on our site – just contact property owners to check about last-minute price reductions or special offers. The best way to search for skiing properties on Holiday Rental Homes.com is to click on ‘Explore Activity Holidays’ and then click ‘skiing’ on the following page. You can then use the skiing landing page to explore countries and properties on the site which could suit your skiing holiday needs. Whatever it is that you are looking for, whether it’s a family ski holiday or a more competitive adventure with friends, we are confident you will find something on Holiday Rental Homes.com to suit you.

A great ski holiday destination is easy to find, however, finding the right accommodation can be a challenge. Unless you and your family would rather book a tiny hotel room that is always quite expensive during high season, you need to find a holiday rental to fit your needs.

When thinking of having a ski holiday you also have to keep in mind you won’t be spending the whole time on the ski piste, you may also try out some other activities in the area like ice skating, climbing, walking or horse riding. After a whole day skiing you may want to spend the evening relaxing by the fireplace with your family or friends and you won’t find that at a hotel.

There are numerous holiday rentals that can provide you with plenty of room and full privacy at an affordable price that oftentimes beats the price of a hotel booking. For instance, let’s say you want to spend your holiday skiing in France, in the Rhone Alps. While there are plenty hotels that can accommodate you there surely are quite a few holiday rentals that will provide you with so much more for the same price.

A simple search for skiing in the French Alps will provide you with an extensive list of holiday rentals that can accommodate you and your family or friends during your ski holiday in France. Ranging from holiday apartments to chalets, most of the properties are affordable and will provide you with a lot more amenities you can find at a hotel.

There’s another facet to the story: you’ve worked hard the whole year for your skiing holiday, why not having the perfect holiday with a vacation rental?
